AI Generated Dialog

Using Ai to Create Voice Acted Dialog

Voice acting presents a significant challenge for indie game developers. Often, to circumvent this challenge, developers opt for text-based conversations without voiceovers. While this approach is functional, it may fall short in terms of immersing players or conveying the NPCs' intended tone.

A promising solution to incorporate dialog in games without the need for hiring actors is the use of AI-generated voice acting. Recent advancements in AI voice technology, though still experimental, have reached a level of quality that significantly enhances player immersion. One such solution is Replica Studios AI, which is actively pushing the boundaries of this concept.

Trailer for Replica Studios AI

While its effects are enticing, the trailer only shows where it's strong, not where
it's weak (for example, Replica does not work with questions).

Although it remains experimental, I personally obtained a few sentences from the Replica Studios AI platform, which I found suitable for my indie game projects. Replica Studios empowers me to craft text-based dialog and then export it as an MP3 file for integration into Unity as an audio clip for in-game use.

In my personal project, I experimented with this workflow by initially compiling a list of phrases designed to convey emotions and tone. My primary focus was on exploring ways to effectively depict NPC emotions, aiming to create a captivating experience for the player. To begin this journey, I decided to construct a dialogue exchange or "argument" between two NPCs as a starting point.

Once I had assembled a list of phrases, including lines such as "you don't understand" and "you're not even trying," I leveraged Replica to generate these lines. Subsequently, I exported these generated lines to Unity, where I implemented a system to play them randomly within the scene. This approach allowed for dynamic and engaging interactions between the NPCs, enhancing the overall depth and immersion of the game.

Using Replica AI in my Personal Project

Here is some dialog of two NPCs arguing. (Voice acted by AI).

Despite the inherent challenges associated with experimental technology, I can clearly envision how this solution has the potential to be a game-changer for many indie developers seeking to elevate immersion and storytelling to a whole new level.
